Samenvatting op: 'Ongeveer 60.000 mensen in Nederland hebben dusdanig last van tinnitus (het voortdurend horen van fantoomgeluiden) dat ze niet goed meer kunnen functioneren. In dit proefschrift worden de effecten onderzocht van een cognitieve gedragstherapie die door de promovenda samen met onderzoekers van de Universiteit Maastricht en collega?s van Adelante audiologie & communicatie is ontwikkeld. In deze klinische studie werden 492 personen met tinnitus een jaar lang gevolgd. De helft kreeg de nieuwe therapie en de andere helft werd conventioneel behandeld met audiologische geluidstherapie. De conclusie is dat de cognitieve therapie tot een significante verbetering van kwaliteit van leven leidde. Deze verbetering trad bij de meerderheid al na twaalf weken in. Over deze bevindingen publiceerde Cima ruim een jaar geleden in het gerenommeerde medische tijdschrift The Lancet. Ook andere studies tonen aan dat vooral vrees voor de tinnitus en catastroferende gedachten over tinnitus de patiënten negatief beïnvloeden.'
